Early next morning Rich woke at
the dip of the mattress beside him.
He stirred sleepily, wrapped in the
warm duvet, his heavy eyes
opening. The mirror opposite shone,
struck by the pale light of oncoming
dawn that slid between the curtains.
One curtain had been drawn aside
as if to look out over the winter
wilderness, with its deep-lying
snow, its ice-edged lakes.
Parker sat beside him with his
knees drawn up and his arms
wrapped around them. By the faint
winter light his profile was
beautiful, pale and remote. The
muscles in his bare arms and
shoulders gleamed. His hair shone a
faint gold. But he was silent, curled
and small.
A spark of foreboding kindled
and Rich rubbed his eyes, fighting
to wake up. When he shifted his
breath caught at the sweet aches
Parker had left him with. He had
lost count of the number of times
Parker had fucked him yesterdayâ
against the wall, on the table,
everywhere. Parker had been
smiling then. Not now.
âParker?â Richâs voice scraped,
rough and scratchy with sleep.
Parker didnât say anything. He
wouldnât look at him.
Rich pushed himself up on one
elbow. âParker?â Still nothing.
Rich reached out, but Parker
flinched slightly. Rich paused, then
took back his hand. A chill raced
through him. He was suddenly
afraid that he had made a mistake
sleeping with Parker. Rich tried a
third time. âEverything okay?â
âThe snow is melting.â Parkerâs
voice was small.
Richâs stomach plummeted. They
had been snowbound together for
days in the little farmhouse. And
now the snow was melting. So
Parker didnât have to stay here any
more. He could leave any time he
wanted.
No wonder Parker was so quiet.
He was figuring out how to tell
Rich that he was done here. That
Rich wasnât worth staying around
for.
Rich felt like heâd swallowed
ice, cold and burning in his
stomach. But this had never been
about what Rich wanted. Rich was
only providing shelter; he could not
expect Parker to stay. âDo you want
to leave?â
Silence.
âYou can. If you want to. Iâm not
going to stop you. I know you only
came here for shelter.â
Parker scrunched up tighter.
âParkerâ¦â
âOkay,â Parker said in a whisper.
âIâll go.â
He sounded so miserable that
Richâs heart turned over. âYou can
stay. Iâd be glad. I just want you to
be happy.â
âWould you really? Be glad?â
âOf course,â Rich said,
surprised. âOf course I would.â
Parker looked down at his bare
toes. âMaybe I could stay a bit
longer?â His voice went up into a
question.
Rich melted. How adorable.
Parker had only been worried that
Rich wouldnât let him stay. âYou
can stay as long as you like.
Really.â
âI like it here. Itâs nice.â
Rich felt warm inside. âGood.â
Parkerâs tension eased. He slid
back down under the warm duvet
and held out his arms. Rich settled
himself comfortably in the curve of
Parkerâs body, cheek against his
bare chest, feeling the steady beat of
his heart. Parker kissed the top of
his head.
âIâm your secret,â Parker
whispered to him. âYou should
keep me.â
Rich smiled as he drifted off to
sleep.
